A program that applies trading rules
An Expert Advisor is a program that can analyze information and send or manage trading requests in a MetaTrader terminal. A trading algorithm is the logic; an EA is one way to implement it. Automation can apply a rule consistently, including when the rule is poorly designed.
EA, indicator, or signal service?
An indicator typically calculates or displays information. An EA can take actions based on rules and permissions. A signal service supplies instructions from another source. These roles may be combined, but they create different dependencies and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Installation is the beginning of evaluation
In a compatible desktop terminal, an EA belongs in the platform’s Experts directory and is attached through the Navigator. MT4 and MT5 use different executable formats. Follow the rights holder’s instructions, inspect inputs, and use a demo account before enabling order execution.
Enabling automated trading gives a program permission to act within its environment. Review optional DLL or web-request permissions carefully. A chart attachment, symbol suffix, account model, or missing dependency can affect whether it operates as expected.
The human responsibilities remain
Someone still chooses the program, account, settings, and monitoring process. Keep versioned records, inspect logs, define what triggers a pause, and verify that open trades are handled after interruptions. Unattended execution is a technical capability, not evidence of safety.
Common questions
Can an EA operate while my computer is switched off?+
A locally running terminal stops when the computer stops. Continuous execution needs a running host or compatible virtual hosting. Broker-held orders may remain, but terminal-managed logic will not run locally.
Is this personalized trading advice?+
No. These guides explain technology and evaluation concepts. Your circumstances, broker terms, and risk tolerance require independent consideration.
