What a historical test answers

A backtest runs programmed rules against historical observations under a set of assumptions. It can expose basic errors and describe behavior in those sampled conditions. It does not replay every live-market detail or tell us the probability of a future result.

02

Data and tick modeling

Bar data summarizes an interval; tick data records or models finer price changes. The order of events inside a bar can decide whether a stop or target triggers first. Inspect the testing mode, source history, gaps, timezone, and symbol contract rather than relying on a modeling label alone.

03

Execution is an assumption

Account for variable spread, commission, financing, delays, and slippage where the test supports them. A request may be rejected or filled differently in live trading. Examine whether a strategy’s apparent result depends on idealized fills or one cost estimate.

04

Overfitting and untouched observations

Trying many configurations and retaining the best historical result can fit noise. Record the selection process and reserve data that was not used to choose parameters. Repeatedly checking that reserved period and tuning again gradually removes its independence.

A forward demo test observes new conditions and operational behavior, but simulated account execution can differ from a live account. Compare the same inputs across a range of conditions and inspect equity, trade distribution, and failure cases.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions

Is a high backtest profit enough evidence?+

No. Review data quality, costs, exposure, drawdown, sample size, parameter selection, and out-of-sample behavior. Historical profit is not a guarantee.

Is this personalized trading advice?+

No. These guides explain technology and evaluation concepts. Your circumstances, broker terms, and risk tolerance require independent consideration.
