01

Balance and equity tell different stories

Balance reflects closed activity and account adjustments. Equity also includes open profit and loss. Drawdown measures a decline from a prior peak; a balance-based measure can understate the stress of a basket holding open losses. Always identify which series is being measured.

02

Position size converts movement into money

Intended loss depends on volume, stop distance, contract size, tick value, conversion, and costs. Minimum volume steps can prevent precise sizing. A small starting lot can be misleading if additional orders or recovery rules increase exposure later.

03

Margin is a constraint, not a loss budget

Margin is collateral required to support exposure. Free margin changes with equity and positions. A broker’s stop-out process may close trades under stress; it is not a substitute for a planned exit. Hedged positions may still require margin and generate costs.

04

Automated controls have dependencies

A terminal-managed equity stop needs a functioning program, connection, and executable requests. A broker-held stop remains subject to execution conditions. Set an account-wide response process for outages and rejected orders, then test it in a controlled environment.

Consider all programs sharing an account. Several EAs trading gold may lose together even if each appears limited separately. Set limits in terms of total exposure and equity stress, and keep monitoring responsibilities clear.
